MBÔONGI. Pudeur de l'intimité

[ENGLISH BELOW]

Told by the people of Mbomo, à Brazza-Mfoa.

[ENGLISH]

Join us for an evening weaving stories through sound and words and film, organized by philosopher, storyteller and Hip Hop MC S.R. Kovo N'Sondé in the framework of the first week for Congolese Culture in Berlin & Brandenburg. He will present the publication and exhibition project Congo Tales which explores the theme of how stories are told and how the oral tradition of passing on stories and cultural practices forms a cornerstone of cultural communities.

This evening is a gesture of echoing the heritage of Chief Wapiti, Simon N'Sondé (1935–2020), who was a painter, ceramist and storyteller. As an artist, preoccupied by the indigence of social conditions for artists, he promoted the diversity of forms and cultural identities in his own creative process.

He inspired his children and grand-children, giving himself a name to this trans-generational dynamic: Creatio_N’Sondé. He is the common denominator of this event in which we share the koongo notions of Nkisi as well as Mboongi (the place-moment where-when traditions were and are still transmitted). After his return from China in 1967, convinced that the young nation had to base itself on the diversity of its population, he curated the two only semaines culturelles congolaises at Brazza-Mfoa. Cultural interactions, oral tradition and modernity had been the Credo of his generation, the one of the independence pioneers. They have built and promoted the concept of Congolese tradi-modernity, which nowadays is claimed by many Congolese artists. In 2018, exactly 50 years after the last time this event took place in central Africa, the CCAV hosted the world première of Congo Tales. Told by the People of Mbomo, at Brazza'Mfoa. Mbomo lies in “the green heart” of Africa which attracted the insatiable and brutal appetite of German and French colonialism.
