The narrator of the documentary film Les Statues meurent aussi says “When men die, they enter history. When statues die, they enter art. This botany of death is what we call culture.” The curator Zeynep Akbal questions in her exhibition project Archival Practices: Visual tendencies of a generation at SAVVY Contemporary how we can deconstruct this cultural botany in order to recompense artistic breakthroughs and creativity. “The discourse regarding ‘Non-Western Art’ has been one of the topics that have directed us to question and expand the borders of ‘art making’”, says Zeynep Akbal. Likewise the concept of the art space SAVVY Contemporary, this exhibition tempts to analyze artworks from the roots of structural, historical and cultural perspectives of the artists instead of simply identifying non-western artists, techniques and the cultures in their artworks.
Archival Practices: Visual tendencies of a generation is dedicated to artists who have the intention to experiment and create.
