A critical reappraisal of colonialism cannot be dismissed as a historical footnote; it is a prerequisite for a just and anti-discriminatory present. This responsibility must not be postponed.
We are delighted to conclude our exhibition DESACTA. COUNTER-SPELLS TO UNRAVEL 140 YEARS OF THE BERLIN CONFERENCE WITH A DISCUSSION with Ibou Diop about his long-standing work on developing concepts for remembering colonialism in Germany.
Ibou Diop [iːbu dj͜ɔp] lives in Berlin. He studied literature in Paris and Berlin and wrote his doctoral thesis on questions of globalisation and universalisation. Ibou Diop is a curator of discourse programmes and contemporary art exhibitions in Senegal and Germany. His work practice has a strong focus on participatory formats that bring together art, thought and civil society to collectively occupy and shape spaces.
Since 2022, he has been working in close collaboration with civil society initiatives on concepts and places for remembering Berlin's colonial past. Co-curated by Max Czollek and Ibou Diop, the ‘heimaten’ festival was launched at HKW in autumn 2024, a multi-year programme to reinterpret the concept of Heimat.
