As part of the exhibition Cushma: Narratives of Another Modernity at Barzani Berlin, we will focus in this workshop on the “cushma”, a traditional Asháninka garment. We will dye fabric using natural pigments such as “palillo” (Curcuma longa L.) and “achiote”, as well as a comparative analysis of the “cushma” with other pre-Hispanic garments. The process, accompanied by audiovisual projections, concludes with a collective reflection and a tasting of “masato”, highlighting textile as a form of cultural expression and resistance. We will learn about dyeing techniques and how these materials have traditionally been used in Asháninka culture as well as about their relationship with cosmology and the natural environment. Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to stamp on fabric, inspired by traditional Asháninka symbols. The sessions will be enriched with video projections, photographs, and images that provide a visual and narrative context, helping to deepen the understanding of the symbolism of color and clothing as cultural expressions.
