The Restitution of Dignity

La restituzione della dignità.

The Restitution of Dignity is an international bilingual editorial project and a series of four printed and online issues of the SAVVY Journal investigating focusing on restitution, reparation, and repair. It addresses the specific context of Italy and its colonial histories as they reverberate in the present. As a collaboration between Archive Books and SAVVY Contemporary, we have been gathering and inviting people to curate and produce four special issues of the SAVVY Journal to address the restitution of colonial loot, the (im)possibility of repairing the crimes of Italian and European colonisation, as well as to reflect upon contemporary daily struggles of communities and individuals against structural racism in Italy and beyond.

After a first launch event in Florence, Italy, we will come together in Berlin with the artists invited to contribute to the journal's issues to discuss the topics resonating with their artistic practices. After closed work sessions with the artists and the editorial team, conversations will be opened to the public through a talk by artist Muna Mussie reflecting on topics of feminism, internationalism, Black Mediterranean and bodily practices, as well as a conversation between artist Theo Eshetu and anthropologist Alula Pankhurst, unfolding topics of restitution and rehabilitation within and beyond the Italian context. In the space of SAVVY.doc, visitors have the possibility to take a look at some of the texts for this project, together with the covers designed by artist Diana Ejaita.
