Shadow Circus in conversation with Colonial Neighbours
08.02.–10.03.2019 Daily 14:00–19:00
In the framework of the exhibition SHADOW CIRCUS, Colonial Neighbours will show the documentary "Geheimnis Tibet" (or: "Lhasa-Lo – Die verbotene Stadt", 1943, directed by Ernst Schäfer, Hans-Albert Lettow), a Nazi propaganda film on the 1938–1939 “German Expedition to Tibet Ernst Schäfer" that was organized and led by German zoologist and SS officer Ernst Schäfer. Schäfer and his team being the first Germans to ever enter the "forbidden town of Lhasa", the film documents the Western image of Tibet in the first part of the 20th century although the objectives and financial supporters of the expedition remain the subject of a controversial scientific and ideological debate.
The film will be on view during the opening hours of the exhibition.
Colonial Neighbours is Lynhan Balatbat-Helbock, Cornelia Knoll, Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju, Jorinde Splettstößer, Marleen Schröder
