Commenting on the group exhibition DOING THINGS WITH WORDS at Kunstverein Braunschweig, SAVVY Contemporary’s ongoing participatory archive and research project Colonial Neighbours will draw on colonial repercussions in the German language and practices of naming. The guest room will be turned into a temporary platform for silenced histories, unnamed practices of colonialist uses of language and the power of naming. In form of a site specific installation with fragments from the Colonial Neighbours archive including footnotes, the participatory project will be expanded to the Guest Room in Braunschweig.
The presentation will be accompanied by a workshop on 24.06.2018 that deals with the relationship between language, power and colonial traces that haunt the German language until today. Based on objects from the Colonial Neighbours Archive and post-colonial readings we discuss and explore this topic through the production of small Zines in which we aim to reflect visually on collective and individual knowledge gaps.
